Alex in rehab

Alex O'Loughlin taking time out from Hawaii Five-0

I know that Alex hurt his shoulder back during Season 1, so I'm guessing this dates from then. And we've all seen how, despite all the guff we were fed about added characters taking some of the load off the original cast, Alex seemed to be doing as much if not more than last season on the show.

With what we know about Alex, his work ethic, how he pushes himself and how he doesn't like to disappoint his fans, I'm willing to bet that he's been soldiering on and trying to deal with this himself (hence the weight loss etc). I know how hard it is for someone who values self-discipline (and not making a fuss!) as much as he does to admit that they need help, so good for him.

He's a strong guy and I know he can beat this. I wish him all that's good. I just hope for his sake, for the show's sake and for our sake that he doesn't have to miss too much filming.

I'm with you-
I know he can beat this, but f--- !
It's not anything I'd wish on anyone- and to have to go public with it -
f--- again...
Back to the facts- he'll beat this and come out stronger.
No question.

So now H50 just has to man up and weather the storm as well.

I just feel they've messed up so badly this season, and we were just starting to get right again and now this.

I feel so sorry for Alex - I know how hard he works, how much this show means to him and what high standards he sets himself. And I've been there, gone on pushing myself well past the point where I should have asked for help because you don't give in, make a fuss or admit you're not coping, you don't admit to weakness. I know how much nerve it takes to acknowledge that you need help. So good for him. And, like you, I know he can beat this.

It's speculation on my part but this, to my outside eye, has as much to do with the season and it's reception as it does Alex himself. He has such a work ethic and the season (up until the last two eps) hasn't been going well, it must have been weighing heavily on him and combine that with the fact that his workload actually increased, it can't have been easy for him.

He just has to think about himself and not the show for a little bit, so they can both be stronger.

[identity profile] azziria.livejournal.com 2012-03-03 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're right, the way the season's been going and the reception it's had from the fans *has* to have affected him. I heard quite early on that things weren't as happy on set as they were in S1, but whether this is part of the reason for that or that is part of the reason for this I can't say.

I can't help but feel that this season has been such a mess - they messed with the dynamic, worked Alex over-hard, and now as soon as things start going right again this happens.

Alex needs to focus on getting better and getting over this; however being who he is and how he is, he's not going to be happy if the show suffers - that's not going to help his recovery either. Both he and the show need to get the balance right for his sake as much as for anyone else's.

I know what it's like to soldier on pretending everything is OK so that you get the job done and not asking for help because it's weakness and because you'd be letting people down. I also know what it feels like when you finally admit it and ask for help. So my thoughts and sympathies are with him right now.

I'm glad he's getting help and that he'll hopefully get back to his old healthy self. And yeah, I hope he won't have to miss too many episodes, but his health is the most important thing.

[identity profile] azziria.livejournal.com 2012-03-03 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
They need to get the balance right - he needs to focus on his health, but also it's not going to help him (given the responsibility he feels towards the show) if it suffers because of this. So they need to get the balance right, for his sake as much as for anyone else's.

I could cry because of this - they messed up so much this season, and all the fuss and bother because of it can't have helped him. Plus his workload seems to have been insane - the other main characters got less screen time, but he seems to have been working just as hard if not harder than last season. I'm just glad he's finally been able to admit that he needs help and ask for it - that's a really tough step to take.

He definitely seems to have worked even harder this season, and--not being catty or bitchy, but just looking at it from a trained actor's perspective--let's face it, LG was not a good actress in that role. And there's no way that didn't increase the number of takes, the amount of coaching, and the hours spent filming her scenes. And most of her scenes were with him. Which pushed him even harder.

I feel for him, I really do. What he's doing isn't easy. I know if anyone has the self discipline to do it, though, it's him. And I'm cheering him on over here.

Oh, OUCH. The poor guy. He's got to be in a really difficult place.

[identity profile] azziria.livejournal.com 2012-03-03 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. But actually admitting he needs help means that he's facing it and moving forwards, which is tough but good.

When I saw the article, I was just heartbroken. He seems like such a genuine guy, so receptive to his fans and an incredible work ethic. They did screw up this season, terribly. Last year's easiness was replaced with a completely different feel and it didn't come back until just recently in these last few eps.

It's good that he decided not to gut his way through the rest of the filming schedule and wait for the summer hiatus- that he's dealing with this now. Hopefully now that he's getting this help, he'll give himself the time to deal with it.

He's a great guy, I wish him the best and I know he'll beat this.

Yes, it broke my heart to read this too. Let's hope for our sake and his that he doesn't need to take too much time off from filming at this stage in the season - he needs to recover physically, but he also needs not to be worrying about the show. There's a balancing act to be done there.

If he's been in pain from a shoulder injury, just imagine what filming the scene with Wo Fat in North Korea must have been like for him... no wonder he's been needing painkillers.

As I said to [livejournal.com profile] and_ed, I wish him all the best - I want him happy, healthy, and back on my TV screen shirtless for a long time to come :)

Agreed--Alex was pushing himself too hard to not disappoint the showrunners, his fans or himself and it's to his credit that he realized that he needed help.

I wish him a speedy recovery.

I was so shocked this morning when I received the news.
I feel so touched by this, like a friend is in trouble, you know?
I hope Alex takes all the time he needs to make a full and complete recovery.

Get better soon Alex!
We love you!

Me too, it's thrown me all day. I hope that he gets the help he needs and beats this. He works so hard on our behalf.
