What would you miss?
A question: what would you/do you miss most about your country (the country you were raised in, or have lived most of your life in? (I’m talking things here, not friends or loved ones.)
For me, the things I’ve missed most when I’ve been travelling (off the top of my head) are:
I’m sure there must be more (why are most of my things food-related?).
For me, the things I’ve missed most when I’ve been travelling (off the top of my head) are:
- Wholemeal toast. A thick slice, crisp on the outside and still soft in the middle, spread while really hot with butter and either honey or Marmite.
- Marmite. You either love it or hate it. I adore it. But only spread very thinly.
- Curry. The typical British Indian restaurant kind. With popadoms and pickles and beer to start.
- BBC Radio 4. A wonderful mix of news, current affairs, drama, comedy, discussion, documentaries, and a whole load of things you can’t quite pigeonhole. So often I’ve turned the radio on and become fascinated by something I would never have turned on specifically to hear.
- Hedgerows. The kind full of primroses and violets in the spring, and perhaps bluebells if it’s really old (bluebells usually indicate the hedge is a remnant of old woodland), then red campion and stitchwort later, with ferns at its foot and Old Man’s Beard running rampant through it.
- Hotels with tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms so you can have a brew when you first wake up. Many Continental hotels don’t have this, and I can’t face ordering from room service first thing in the morning.
I’m sure there must be more (why are most of my things food-related?).

Yes!!!!!! it drives me MAD not to have coffee facilities.
Add to this list: Real Ale and proper pubs.
I love German beer and Belgish beer isn't bad either, but I adore ale.
However, I do miss German Pils.

What else?
HP sauce. Brown sauce, daddy's whatever, just doesn't do it - it must be HP or nothing.
Coppers without guns.
There will be others but they're not springing to mind.

English weather. Definitely missed the cold and the rain.
The smallness of the UK. When you go to a big, wide open country like NZ, you do notice it.
Fish and chip shops. They had them in NZ but the fish was different and tasted odd. (I think it was harpuka, instead of cod.)
I think now I'd miss the weather, the TV (we like ugly soap actors!), the country, the cold seas (taint natural to have warm sea), loose tealeaves (teabags being the work of something evil), just the general attitude to everything. I know it's supposed to be unfashionable, but I like being British!

Your hedgerows sound so wonderful I want to visit England again just to see them. The couple times we've been to England we didn't get out into the country enough to see hedgerows. To think there's so much history and natural history in such a simple thing.
Must go out and go hiking in the Redwood forest now. Or at least steal your meme.
