azziriaEver had it happen that someone famous dies and for some reason you don’t hear about it? Then weeks later someone mentions it, and it comes as a complete surprise?
This happened to me yesterday. I picked up the Sunday newspaper sports supplement and there was an article about the decline and death of the Italian cyclist Marco Pantani, who died while we were skiing so I completely missed that it had happened.
A squalid and lonely death (apparently drug-related) for a man who was one of the true greats, an incredible and gifted climber in his prime, a winner of the Giro and the Tour. One of cycling’s great characters, but one who in the end was broken by the pressures of fame and of needing to perform.
Such a sad waste.
