The sailing trip
Jan. 8th, 2004 07:33 pmI've wanted to go sailing ever since I was a child - we used to go to the Isles of Scilly on holiday, and I used to get so envious of all the people (mostly French) who sailed in on their yachts (in fact I think I wrote my first Mary Sue at 12 about me, a Frenchman and a yacht *facepalm*). Never got round to the sailing thing, too many other demands on my time and money (caving, climbing mountains etc).
Then this summer Pirates and Master and Commander, plus Patrick O'Brian's books, reawoke my longing to give it a try. Knowing I had some time off by myself due to me (DH is going skiing for a week, this is my trip in return for that) I looked around a bit but didn't really find what I was looking for. Then I got a bit low, Christmas came along, and I lost my drive a bit.
On Tuesday night I told DH about my possible plans for Barcelona and the Lakes, and he reminded me that what I'd said I wanted to do was sail. Although I thought it was too late to do anything about it, he made me promise to look the next day.
So I went on the net and immediately found a place, leaving end of January, to sail a tall ship from Lisbon to Cadiz. Very very cheap, and hard work, but that's what I want, I want to be part of sailing the thing, not just sitting on deck watching a crew do all the work. I want to learn some stuff about sailing a tall ship.
She's called the Prince William, she's a square rigged brig built in Devon, and she belongs to the Sail Training Association. She carries a crew of 65, she's a 195 feet long, and those masts are 120 feet high.
I need an adventure, need to be one of the people doing stuff rather than looking on. This fits the bill perfectly, as well as being something I've always wanted to do. But yes, I am a bit nervous as well as wildly excited!
