A question: what would you/do you miss most about your country (the country you were raised in, or have lived most of your life in? (I’m talking things here, not friends or loved ones.)

For me, the things I’ve missed most when I’ve been travelling (off the top of my head) are:
  • Wholemeal toast. A thick slice, crisp on the outside and still soft in the middle, spread while really hot with butter and either honey or Marmite.

  • Marmite. You either love it or hate it. I adore it. But only spread very thinly.

  • Curry. The typical British Indian restaurant kind. With popadoms and pickles and beer to start.

  • BBC Radio 4. A wonderful mix of news, current affairs, drama, comedy, discussion, documentaries, and a whole load of things you can’t quite pigeonhole. So often I’ve turned the radio on and become fascinated by something I would never have turned on specifically to hear.

  • Hedgerows. The kind full of primroses and violets in the spring, and perhaps bluebells if it’s really old (bluebells usually indicate the hedge is a remnant of old woodland), then red campion and stitchwort later, with ferns at its foot and Old Man’s Beard running rampant through it.

  • Hotels with tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms so you can have a brew when you first wake up. Many Continental hotels don’t have this, and I can’t face ordering from room service first thing in the morning.

I’m sure there must be more (why are most of my things food-related?).
