Quote from the creator, Kurt Sutter, that made me go "Yes!", because it's what I've been seeing:

"To me, the interesting thing is that at the end of the day, we’re telling this story about this hardcore motorcycle club, but I’m realizing more and more for me, I’m really telling it through the eyes of the women."

I didn't watch this show for so long because I was leery of how a show about a biker gang could possibly depict women. But the key female characters are some of the strongest characters in the show - in fact some of the strongest in anything I'm watching right now.
