Justified

So, now that I'm all caught right up to the end of S4 of Sons of Anarchy, I've started in on the first season of Justified, which I am enjoying so much - the writing is making me laugh for all the *right* reasons.

So how come, when there are shows as well-written and well-characterised as SoA and Justified to watch, how come I've got myself all twisted up by a police procedural where the writers dropped the ball with the characterisation of one of the main leads (for the first third of the season, anyway) and completely failed to make a major new character anything other than completely two-dimensional and uninteresting?

I love H50, but I have to say that (for me, anyway) the quality of the character writing this season has been decidedly patchy to say the least, and when I watch shows that get it right it really hammers that home to me.

Justified is one of the best written shows out there. There's a few meh moments, but for the most part it's just amazing even when there's not much going on. You just enjoy 'living' with the characters.

Then you watch H50...lol. They do try. Most shows wouldn't go through the trouble to have at least a few character moments at the start and end. But that's the difference between network and cable TV writing. (and lets not forget diff pressures)

I just love the way even the minor characters are interesting... and how their criminals have all sorts of shades of grey :)

I dunno, I never really have watched H50 for the writing. I'm fairly good at compartmentalizing shows. For good writing I watch shows like Southland (which is amazing) and for some mindless awesomeness, I watch H50.

Character is such a big issue with me and yeah, for a lot of this season for H5O, it got screwed over. It's a shame they basically wasted 2/3rds of the season.

Have to agree with you about H5-0. Season one was soooo good. This season they really dropped the ball. At this point I am looking forward to season 3 and hoping they can somehow get it right again. I am not going to get my undies in a wad this summer speculating what will happen with the season 2 finale cliffhanger picking up in the season 3 premiere. I wasted too much time of my life last year sweating out the season 1 cliffhanger. Here's hoping for better writing for the rest of this season and into season 3..................................

You're so right. At least there are these other good shows to watch. I haven't watched either one of these. I'm watching Mad Men, Game of Thrones and I just started Smash, but I have a lot to catch up on.

I could live with the plot holes and the less-than-stellar writing because hey, popcorn TV, but at least the main characters were fairly consistent... until they had Danny sleep with Rachel without showing us a moment's soul-searching from him about sleeping with another man's wife. I'm not saying he wouldn't have slept with her, it's just that for me it was out of character for the Danny they'd shown us so far to do it without at least a tiny hint of guilt. And then in the first half of S2 - well, the Danny who made that impassioned plea to through the intercomm at Rachel's gate in S1 would *never* have taken his beloved daughter trick-or-treating at a sleazy motel. They messed up with Danny's character.

And we won't go into how I still can't believe they so totally failed to give Lori any sort of character at all.

For my sister and I (thru odd circumstances) has to more or less just pick one tv show for the entire tv season and we chose H50 for yes! the yummy guys, the great emsemble but realy the kicker for us was the stellar fanfic writers.
