It seems that our complimentary holiday dog is a found item - her owners found her at the bottom of the lane one day, and nobody ever came forward to claim her. Whether she was dumped or a runaway they'll never know, they're just glad she came their way - and she seems pretty happy with the arrangement too :)

It reminds me of another dog I once knew. The landlord of the pub my father used to drink in in the village where I grew up had a beautiful and obviously pedigree Boxer bitch, a gorgeous and very friendly dog. One evening a man, a stranger, had come into the pub and bought a pint. He had this dog with him, and when the landlord admired her the man said "Have her, she's yours," and walked out, leaving the dog behind. The landlord later discovered that the dog had had expensive surgery (metal pins etc) at some point in the past for a broken leg, so she'd clearly been a loved and wanted dog, but he never saw the man again and never found out why he'd given the dog away - a messy divorce, perhaps, and a last act of spite against an ex-partner? Whatever her provenance, the dog lived a long and happy life in the pub, so it all worked out for her at least.

What a strange bit of luck for everyone in the pub and for the dog!

Sometimes a "found" dog are the best ones. When I was growing up, our dog Candy was found abandoned in a backyard by the police and my dad's best friend was one of the cops who found her, and she became ours without any problems.
