We were in France when it happened, in the Dordogne on holiday. We came back to the gite and turned the TV on to try and get a weather forecast.
At first we thought we'd got our times wrong and that we were watching some disaster movie. Then I started to translate what I was hearing and was sure I must have it wrong, that I must be misunderstanding the French.
We spent the next couple of days bumping into Americans desperate to find out what was going on. They couldn't phone home because the phones were down there, and couldn't speak enough French to understand the newspapers or TV reports. I spent quite a bit of time interpreting. We all of us felt a very long way from home.
Even for those of us who had lived through the IRA bombing campaigns in London had never imagined that anyone would dare go this far. Someone had dared to do the unthinkable, and certainly for me nothing would ever be quite the same again.
My thoughts are with all those who lost relatives and friends that day.
