So, what has to go in a Christmas stocking? What is it not a 'real' stocking without?

I do small stockings for the kids each year, to open first thing in the morning (we do the big presents mid-morning, with champagne). Each stocking has ten items, no more no less. One of those items has to be a bag of chocolate coins. Another is always a snowman bath bomb from Lush. These are non-negotiables.

I also usually put in a trashy magazine each (ponies for DD, soccer for DS). This year they're getting a small tube of indoor sparklers each. DD might get some nail varnish. The rest of the items will depend on what I see over the next couple of weeks.

What do you put in Christmas stockings?

Always a bag of chocolate coins. Usually little bits of things like sweets or tiny books, or pencils. And ALWAYS a tiny lump of coal HAHAHAHAAHA

Ours used to be an orange, some nuts, a book, some sweets and a toothbrush :)

Oh yes! New toothbrushes are a staple here, too; the kids enjoy seeing which silly character-themed merchandise-driven one is in this year's stocking. I actually found one that was Twilight-based.

My mom-in-law always puts Avon perfume and hand lotion and lip balm in mine and the girls' stockings; Estel invariably receives Avon cologne and "men's soap" in his. It's become a running joke, by now. EK actually enjoys the hand lotion, though it smells like bug spray. Everyone in the family gets a lottery ticket in their stocking, as well - even the toddlers. Family tradition! There's no accounting for it.

Here at home where *I* get more say in what's reasonable and proper the kids get a candy cane, often a little toy car or a plastic kitten (5cm tall), an assortment of desk supplies (pens, pencils, post-it notes; each in fun colors) and maybe some makeup for EK and something gecko-themed for YK. There's nearly always something frivolous that Lin Would Absolutely Not Approve Of. This year, that item in EK's stocking (don't tell!) is a set of "Twilight" trading cards. Shirtless Jacob! Glowering Edward! Oh MY!
