Out for 3.3 km at 1800.

Aching quite a bit from the gym yesterday, so just did a couple of easy miles to clear out my lungs.

So what, exactly are the demands of crewing? How in shape do you want to be?

The one thing they did say in the first crew briefing doc we got was that after the first sail training weekend we might find we need to work on our fitness. So although I'm pretty fit compared with the general population, I thought I'd make an effort - but then I got ill and I've pretty much had a couple of months off fitness training, so I need to get down to it now.

The main things are general CV fitness for stamina (although a lot of that is just general mental toughness and endurance, and I'm good there... or just plain stubborn...). The other thing is just having the strength - the yacht is a 72-footer and it's designed for racing. So that's no roller reefing for the jib, every sail change means that you have to bend on the new jib, and if you get light winds that Number 1 jib is a big mother to haul out of the sail locker and bend on (played that game on a big yacht before - No. 3 up to No. 1 then down to the storm jib in one day... absolutely knackering!).

Bottom line is that if the skipper knows his job (and he's young and sounds enthusiastic, so I suspect we're really going to be doing this full on!) the sail changes will be a b*tch, so I need to be fit!
