What a gorgeous film. So very evocative of its time (worth seeing for the cars alone, seriously). Muted colours, wonderful casting and characterisations, and a slow-paced build of tension so very different from most modern 'wham bam thank you m'am' action spy thrillers. And very true to the book. Gary Oldman is perfect as Smiley, a grey and ordinary-looking man with a rat-trap mind, and John Hurt's dying and gone to seed Control is... just right. Beautifully filmed, and I want to see it again on DVD so that I can focus on all the little background details.
H5-0 is of course a total contrast to Tinker, Tailor, being colourful, fast and loud. Loved it all except for the rather speedy dismissal of the Rachel storyline, but I can live with that. And I have to say what I always seem to be saying, which is 'How come Steve gets even more gorgeous every time?'. Him running around in that tank top all sweaty and bloody is virtually porn for me... guh...
